Islamic Militants Fulani: Killed Seven Christians in Benue State Nigeria

In a continued wave of violence, Islamic Militants Fulani killed seven people in Egwuma village, Agatu County, Benue State, last week. This is the fourth attack in the region within the past month.

On Tuesday, October 1, Islamic Militants Fulani attacked on Egwuma village at around 5 PM, shooting at residents as they stormed the area. “They began shooting sporadically at the Christian villagers when they got into the village,” said Philip Ebenyakwu, chairman of the Agatu Local Government Council, in a press statement. “They killed seven people and injured dozens of others during the attack. He further added we have also contacted security agencies, and they are mobilizing to go after the invaders.”

A resident called on authorities to act quickly, stating, “It is crucial that a comprehensive investigation is conducted into this incident, and those accountable are brought to justice. The attacks by Islamic militants, particularly the Fulani, have been increasing and are emerging as one of the most lethal terrorist factions globally. The Nigerian government needs to take strong measures to tackle this escalating danger and ensure the safety of its citizens.”

The attacks have reignited concerns over the government’s ability to protect Christian communities as the violence continues to devastate Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

Since the Islamic insurgency began in 2009, over 52,250 Christians have been killed in Nigeria in 2009, according to the report of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety).

The report, titled “Martyred Christians in Nigeria,” highlights the extreme violence and persecution faced by Nigerian Christians, with Islamist militants responsible for at least 52,250 deaths in the last 14 years. Intersociety, a Nigerian research and investigative rights group, has been tracking religious violence and persecution across the country since 2010.
